Full Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Marangu Gate - Mandara Hut

Your adventure begins with a pickup from your hotel in Arusha and a scenic drive to Marangu Gate (1,800 meters), which takes about 2-3 hours. After registration with the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities, begin your trek through the lush rainforest. The hike to Mandara Hut (2,700 meters) takes approximately 4-5 hours.

Along the way, you’ll have the chance to spot various species of birds and monkeys. After reaching Mandara Hut, take time to relax and explore the surrounding area, which features beautiful waterfalls. Enjoy a hearty dinner at the hut and prepare for your first night on the mountain.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After breakfast, depart Mandara Hut for Horombo Hut (3,720 meters). The trek lasts about 6-7 hours and takes you through the moorland zone, where you can enjoy spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak.

As you hike, take in the unique flora of the region, including giant lobelias and various types of heath plants. Upon reaching Horombo Hut, settle in, enjoy dinner, and take time to acclimatize as you prepare for the ascent to the summit. Spend the night at the hut.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Today, you’ll trek from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700 meters). This section takes approximately 6-7 hours. The trail is relatively straightforward, with some gradual inclines.

Enjoy the stunning scenery as you approach Kibo, which is the base camp for your summit attempt. Upon arrival, you’ll have time to rest and prepare for the night. A hearty dinner will be served early to ensure you’re well-rested before your midnight ascent.

Day 4: Summit Day (Uhuru Peak) - Descend to Horombo Hut

Depart Kibo Hut around midnight for the summit attempt. The trek to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) takes approximately 6-8 hours. The ascent is steep, and temperatures can be extremely low, so be sure to dress warmly.

Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, celebrate your achievement and take in the spectacular views. After some time at the summit, begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut (3,720 meters). The total descent can take around 5-6 hours. Enjoy dinner at the hut and share stories of your incredible summit experience with fellow trekkers.

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate - Arusha

After breakfast, begin your final descent from Horombo Hut back to Marangu Gate. The trek takes about 5-6 hours. Enjoy the beautiful scenery as you make your way through the lush rainforest once again.

Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you will complete the necessary formalities, and your guide will present you with a summit certificate. From there, a vehicle will take you back to Arusha, where you can celebrate your successful climb with a well-deserved dinner.

The best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro is during the dry seasons, which occur from June to October and from December to February. However, climbing during the rainy seasons (March to May and November) is not advisable due to slippery trails and poor visibility. Although it’s possible to climb all year round, the dry seasons offer the best chance for success.
